European Solidarity Corps and Donkeys on Aruba
The Donkey Sanctuary Aruba has achieved the Quality label for European Solidarity Corps ESC allowing us to access EU funds to host volunteers at the sanctuary. Young adults from all over the EU can participate in volunteer programs in Europe and also in Aruba. Please find a national agency in the country of your residency or register directly at https://europa.eu/youth/solidarity_en to find out more and check if we have availability for short term (2 months) or long term project (6 months).
If you join us on a European Solidarity Corps project, you will stay in one of our apartments which you will share with other volunteers. There is a bathroom, kitchen and outside dining table, which you will share. Want to see more, select “apartments” on this website.
Working with donkeys is FUN. They are sweet, smart, gentle and sometimes very annoying because they want to help you clean poop and turn over your wheel barrow i.e. Our organization was founded in 1997, we started with 10 donkeys and now we take care of 100+ donkeys. That needs some serious cleaning (daily). We feed the donkeys twice a day and when the vet visits you can assist him/her as well.
You will talk to the visitors, inform them about the sanctuary and the donkeys in general and share some facts about the history and why they belong to Aruba as well. Not only person to person, but also for larger groups that come in with an organized tour.
You will sell a “T-shirt” or an ice cream, keep the visitors center clean, this also means cleaning bathrooms.
Volunteers that come with ESC have to volunteer 32 hours a week. It is also possible to combine volunteering at the Veterinary Clinic, Contreras Veterinary Services. All in good mutual consultation. Volunteering 32 hours a week gives you time to explore the Island and learn about a new culture, meet new young people, both other volunteers and those native to Aruba.
